SilMinds

DFP Unit (DFPU)

The merit of DFP arithmetic is evident by the range of software libraries and high level programming languages that each support several functions. Due to software runtime performance penalty, processor makers have started incorporating some DFP arithmetic/logic functions into their processors; most notably IBM Power 6 and 7 and more recently Fujitsu SparcX processors.

SilMinds has prototyped an FPGA-based coprocessor-driven DFPU that uses an optimized proprietary instruction set and runs extended ANSI C using an in-house developed API, and has also gone some steps towards ASIC testing. DecLib units, in arbitrary combinations, are available for licensing to function as a DFPU for general and special purpose processors.
